Myvatn, Island

Design Concept

The project site is located on the heart of three geographical attractions: Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir and Myvatn. Our intention is to design the space centered on the concept of information movement becoming synergistic to the orientation of the building in relation to the attractions and the internal movement of visitors in order to increase opportunities for education, enjoyment and recognition of the landscape of Iceland. The proposed building does not disrupt the tranquil surroundings; but stands as a beacon of the site offering respite for those who return from Hverfjall hiking. The building form is the outcome of putting three different views together in a gentle manner with curving walls and regulated openings. The composition of the three frames is influenced by geographical attractions. Hverfjall is framed as a monumental piece providing the eternal photographic memory emphasizing its gravitas and magnificence. An inward sweeping frame provides a warm and welcoming view of Dimmuborgir as the entrance staggers under the building canopy allowing a gradual transition into the building. The long, panoramic view of Myvatn focuses on the colour and initial plumes of steam from the hot spring indicates a potential next stop for visitors. This is intended to be the final frame in the visitor centre.
